Continual Professional Development for Accountants – Communication
For many new accountants, landing a first job or promotion can be a major accomplishment. But those looking to progress further and earn the big bucks will need to keep their learning going throughout their careers, and the most vital area we can all continue to improve on is communication.
In practice, it is a new accountant’s client development skills that will help him or her stand out from the pack and accelerate their career progression – and good communication skills are key to this. They will need to listen to and interpret what their client wants, and communicate their expectations of what they (or their firm) are able to contribute and how the results will be quantified. This will lay the groundwork for building a successful, long-term relationship.
For those working in industry, in addition to performing regular accounting tasks, accounting professionals need to draft correspondence, prepare reports, interpretations and foot notes for management review, perusal and decisions. They are also required to coordinate with various parties, such as, debtors, creditors, clients, banks or affiliate companies. Hence, improving both verbal and written communication is very much important for all accounting professionals.
While some might think that they do not need to improve their communication skills due to the dominant numerical aspect of their work, it must be noted that accounting today also involves looking beyond the numbers, gathering and preparing reliable information for the intended parties.
There are times when accounting professionals need to communicate about changes, results and information pertaining to financial data in written formats, or provide accurate information in meetings and presentations. In order to manage such situations successfully, they need to develop their effective verbal and written communication.
How to improve your communication skills
