ACCA Exam preparation: Help is at hand
When preparing for your professional exams, it helps to have as much support and useful resources at your fingertips as possible. As well as past papers themselves, one of the most useful tools now provided by exam boards is the Examiner’s Report. These are freely available from your examining body’s website.
Examiner’s Reports are written and published a month or so after each exam, once all the papers have been analysed and marks formally declared, and give an excellent overview of the paper and how students approached it.
Content of the Examiner’s Report
Depending on the structure of the paper itself, the report will give a general summary of performance, including areas where students did particularly well or particularly struggled. It will then go into more detail about each section of the paper, highlighting some specific questions and how they should have been answered and why.
For questions that required more detailed written answers, the report breaks down what was expected overall, common mistakes made by students, and how these could be rectified to maximise their marks.
How to use the Reports
We always recommend taking practice papers and working through practice questions in exam conditions as excellent preparation for exams. Once you’ve done that, have a read through the Examiner’s Report for that paper and be critical of your work to see how closely what you wrote matches up to the expected answers and common mistakes.
If you didn’t do particularly well, try taking that paper again after a few days, using the notes from the report. Even though you’ll know a lot of the answers it will give you confidence in being able to complete a paper to a good standard and know what level of knowledge is expected of you.
Even if you did well in your practice paper compared to the Examiner’s Report, make sure you work out why, so you’re able to repeat that success in the real thing.
Additional support from professional tutors
While these resources can be vital in picking up some key titbits of information you may have overlooked in your exam preparation, having someone to discuss and breakdown this information with can ensure you fully understand the information in the report and are able to apply it when you sit your paper.
As an integrated part of studying with Reed Business School, we provide unparalleled access to our tutors for 1-2-1 discussions on topics students require additional help with, marking of practice papers, and discussion of the answers and best approaches to specific questions. And that’s just part of our overall offer to make sure our students are fully supported come the big day.
